Article by Andrew Murray

It used to be that beds for dogs were pretty simple things. You might put down a rug, a folded blanket, or a pile of old towels in a corner or near the fireplace, and that was it. But these pet beds have come a long way since those days. Sometimes people don't have a special bed for their dog, but let it sleep with them on their own bed. Or sometimes dog crates double as beds for the night. But others want their dogs to have something distinctive to sleep on or in, and there are some interesting and fun versions of these beds out there.

Many people looking for very special beds for dogs often decide on something like a canopy bed. Some look much like the traditional canopy frames that humans use, while others take on a more exotic tone. For example, Glamour Dog (www.glamourdog.com) sells what are essentially round, canopied tents, with roofs that rise to a pointed central spire. These luxury dog beds bring to mind something like a Sultan's tent, and are richly decorated with jewels or feathers or fur.

However, taking a less informal path in unusual dog beds, one very fascinating kind is the Murphy bed. This is the kind of bed that is folded up against the wall during the day, revealing simply a decorative wooden cabinet. But for nighttime, the concealed mattress and bedding is pulled out to the floor. This kind of dog furniture can be both functional and ornamental. It saves space during the daytime, but can also be styled to match the other furniture in the room. It becomes a real component of the decor.

Other unusual beds for dogs are found in the shapes of cars or trucks. Some people buy little gazebos with cushions inside, while other beds might be made of bamboo frames, with drawers under the bed where brushes, collars and dog toys can be stored. An unusual pet bed is generally chosen for style, meaning that it will be a bit different and add something extra to the room. There's an element of pampering, but also a bit of fun. This type of bed is almost always chosen to enhance both the dog's life and that of its human companion.

If you want your dog to sleep at the foot of your bed, or it really likes that rug near the fireplace, then you may not need to get anything special. But there are some cool dog beds out there, and many pet owners really go in for unusual designs.

Article by Kaila

If you own a pet, especially a dog, you probably consider it a member of your family. He or she is probably cute, friendly, and gives you its complete, undivided attention at the snap of a finger or a call of its name. What's not to love about man's best friend? They even say that pet owners live longer, on average, than non-pet owners. If that fact doesn't sound surprising, it's probably because it makes perfect sense. Dogs make us happy. And because of this, we reward our fury friends with the best treats, toys and even dog beds.

If you don't own any dog beds, you might want to consider these five reasons to get them for your beloved pets.

Your Dog Wants It

Your canine wants a bed, and it probably asks you for one all the time without you even realizing it. Think about this. For any dog owner out there, you already know what happens when you leave a piece of clothing, towel or blanket on the ground. Your dog will spin around in it, paw at it, and plop right on top of it. Yes, that's pet speak for "Hey, the carpet just isn't doing it for me anymore," so maybe it's time to invest in a bed.

Great For Naps

You already know this of course, but for those of you who let your canine friends sleep with you in your own beds at night, and you are thinking that this is why your pets don't need dog beds, don't forget about those daylight hours when you're awake.

Chances are, if you let your pet sleep in your own bed, your pet doesn't sleep there when you're out and about, or even when you are at home in the living room. If you are away at work, your little fury friends are probably waiting for you near the front door, anticipating any sound that would indicate that you were almost home, at which point they will spend the proceeding five minutes jumping around in euphoric joy. So when you're awake, a comfortable place to nap other than your couch might make those waiting hours that much easier on them.

Keeps Furniture Clean From Pet Hair

If your dog sheds, you probably spend a good amount of time vacuuming or picking hair off your couch and bed. And from there, it always seems to get everywhere else: in your clothes, on your drapes, even, inexplicably, in your coffee cup on occasion. Pet furniture is a great way to quarantine your pet hair problem to a manageable area.

Beds Are Affordable

The good thing about comfortable pet furniture is that it's usually reasonably priced, with a wide range of pricing to meet your budget. And if you own a small pet, these prices can be significantly low in cost. Be sure to shop around for the best deals, and look for customer reviews to be certain other pet owners are happy with the product.

Your Pet Deserves ItIt's your beloved pet, so treat it like a king or queen. Let's face it you probably love your pet a little too much, so the next time you see your dog sleeping on the hard ground, there's an easy way to stop feeling guilty about it.

Your dog is already a member of your family, so show it some love and give it what it wants and needs by investing in dog beds today. Your dog is sure to thank you with many licks to the face.

Article by Ben Pate

As the age of your best friend increases you will need to start looking for suitable and within budget orthopedic dog beds.

Our mature K9 friends suffers more and more from bone fractures and arthritis as a result of being not being active enough or active at all, pollution and a poor diet. Although very few dog owners wants to recognise it, the ever persistent jumping up and down from the bed or couch are a great contributor to our aging friends' discomfort.

The most common signs of orhtopedic problems and discomfort in dogs are noticed by behaviour such as slower and or sluggish movement, reluctance to move around or not moving at all.

The cold open floor is never a good place for your dog to sleep, irrespective of his age. But letting your aged dog sleeping on the floor is the worst situation for his condition. The ideal is to find a dog bed that will secure even weight distribution with a comfortable surface. Bumpy dog beds feeling as if it is full of potholes are not good and will only contribute to more discomfort and pain.

Orthopedic dog beds are available in many shapes and forms and some can be very correspondingly to your own furniture with the exception that your dog will be able to move up and down with much more ease as it is closer to the ground. Commonly orthopedic dog beds' structure consists of a square box frame and is equipped with a memory foam mattress. It is important to take features such as stain resistance and easy cleaning into account before buying an orhtopedic dog bed.

Suitable orthopedic dogs will provide comfort and provide some relieve from the pain suffered. Ideal for this qualities are double-sided ortho foam complimented with a furry comfortable material cover. Moreover, you would want a bed that trap and repel odours and are protected against allergens, viruses, dust mites, bacteria, insects and parasites. Good orhtopedic dog beds are not too heavy and can be moved with ease due to the light construction materials used.

A three inch egg crate can be used in cases where no other alternatives are possible, however one needs to note that it is not the ideal solution and the relieve and comfort provided are very limited. An orthopedic dog bed filled with gel or comprises of memory foam provides the best comfort and relieve for your dog's orthopedic needs.

A gel-filled bed is regarded to be the ultimate solution with the most advantages, comfort and support to your dog. Memory foam is a more affordable and almost as good alternative to gel filled orthopedic dog beds. Memory foam beds conforms to the shape of your dog's body and therefore provides excellent even weight distribution to the animal.

Question by Dog Log: Ortho seven garden dust used to be used on dogs with fleas?
and or their bedding is it still the same product. It used to say on the label you could do that, but its now no longer said if its safe

Best answer:

Answer by T
All Animals and Fleas
Use castile soap. Mix castile soap with water and using a flea comb, comb through your pet's hair. Periodically dip the comb in the water to remove the built up hair, fleas, and flea dirt. This can help to provide some immediate relief.
Sprinkle rosemary and/or eucalyptus leaves in your pet's bedding.
Wash the bedding often.
Rub Brewer's Yeast onto their fur and skin. It will fight the fleas externally by its presence and internally, when they lick some of it off.
Use citrus repellent. It works for fleas, anywhere, but be sure to concentrate behind the ears, around the head (watch out for the eyes), the base of the tail (be careful there, too), and their 'pits'.
Make a 'flea collar'. Take the pet's collar or neckerchief and put on drops of eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, citronella, lavender, or geranium. This will need to be done weekly.[6]

The House and Garden
Find fleas crossing your threshold.Sprinkle borax soap around the area to keep them out of the house.

Your animals love your furniture. So do the fleas.Sprinkle borax onto the carpet, on the furniture, and in your furniture. Use an old seasoning shaker, labeled to keep it away from the food preparation area.
Add a bit of salt to your vacuuming.Sprinkle it on the floor and vacuum the area. The salt and borax will kill any fleas that find their way into your vacuum cleaner bag,
Shake a layer of salt onto your furniture and floor and leave it overnight. Vacuum in the morning, and throw out the bag.
Spray flea control nematodes.[7] These beneficial microbes work by killing them while in the developing stage, where they live in the soil. This disturbs their life cycle, lessening their numbers.

Beds for dogs are as important as beds for humans. Dogs spend more than half their lives sleeping, typically around 10-16 hours a day, depending upon the age and activity level of the dog. Working dogs tend to sleep less, non-working house dwellers usually sleeps longer hours.

Dogs sleep patterns are very similar to humans. They go through slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) just like us. However their sleep cycles are shorter then humans, that is why dogs take frequent short naps instead of sleeping at one long stretch like most humans do.

It's a lot of fun to watch your dog when they are in their REM sleep, every dog owner has seen their buddy running after and maybe even howling and barking at their dreamland squirrels. I have seen dogs wake themselves up with their load barking during REM sleep, the confused look on their face is priceless!

When a dog is curled up in a ball she is usually in the SWS phase of sleep, and is easily awakened. Dogs usually spend their REM sleep stretched out on their sides or lying on their backs, that is when they sleep the most soundly. So be sure your dog bed has plenty of room for her to stretch out and sleep deeply.

You may also need more then one bed for your dog. Your might need a heated dog bed for outdoors, but indoors, you want something that is comfortable for your dog and looks attractive in your home. Or maybe a bed in the family room so she can hang with the pack during the day, and another bed where she spends the night while the human pack members are sleeping. A dog sleeping beside the bed of a child is a sweet sight to see.

Beds for dogs come in as many varieties as there are dogs. Always consider the unique needs of your dog when buying your friend a bed.

Choosing a bed for your dog is an act of love. Many owners consider luxury first when picking out the right bed for their dog, but practicality should be an important consideration. Waterproof dog beds offer a great blend of comfort and practicality for any dog and dog owner.

Waterproof beds offer many advantages for both owners and dogs. They're easy to clean - in most cases, you can just wipe off any dirt or mud. If the bed is more heavily soiled, most waterproof beds have removable covers that you can just toss in the washing machine. If your pet spends time outside, you can put a waterproof dog bed outdoors for his comfort and not concern yourself with it getting wet and dirty. A waterproof bed is relatively weatherproof, so you don't have to worry about it getting waterlogged and mildewed, making it better and more hygienic for your dog.

In addition, waterproof dog beds are a good choice for young puppies and older dogs that have become incontinent. If your pet has an accident and soils the bed, you can simply wipe it clean and disinfect it. There's no need to worry about the urine penetrating the mattress, which virtually eliminates the possibility of urine and dirty dog odor.

Your dog's bed is his comfort place, the spot he runs for when he's upset or frightened. That means he'll often end up bolting for his bed immediately after bath time - or if you're unlucky, in the middle of his bath, covered with suds and dripping wet. It's just another time you'll be happy you chose a bed that resists or repels water.

Styles of Waterproof Beds

You can purchase a waterproof dog bed in just about any style. They come with round, oval, square or rectangular cushions and many even include memory foam dog mattresses with waterproof covers. Some are plain and inexpensive while others look like the type of designer dog bed you'd expect for a Beverly Hills dog. They may have any kind of mattress, including memory foam dog mattresses, mattresses filled with polyester fiber, gel foam mattresses or mattresses filled with polyester beads that conform to your dog's body contours.

In addition, you'll find that waterproof beds come in a wide range of colors and patterns, which won't matter to your dog but can allow you to choose a dog bed that suits your home decor to some extent. Whether you want to pamper your poodle princess with a pink luxury bed or give your schnauzer a manly dog bed in hunter plaid, you'll find waterproof dog beds to suit.

Getting Your Dog Used to His New Bed

While your dog may not care about the color of his new bed, there is one thing that he will care about - the way it smells. When you get the bed home, wash it down with disinfectant and let it air, then rub the clean bed down with one of this dog blankets - preferable one that he's slept with for a few nights. That will transfer his own scent to the new bed and help him accept it more quickly and easily.

Waterproof dog beds are a good investment. The right one will last for years and make life more comfortable and easier for both you and your dog.

Question by AZrunner: Baking soda to wash my dog beds?
I already wash the bedding once a month, and bathe my babies regularly. Its not a matter of diet or health.......
That being said, can I use baking soda in the wash with the dog beds to give them a deodorizing boost?

If so, for only two beds, how much do I use? Can I use my detergent too? How about fabric softener? Do I need to do an extra rinse to get it all out? Any draw backs to using it on dog bedding?

Thankyou!!!
Dot: How much? do I add it to the wash with soap, or to the rinse cycle?

Best answer:

Answer by dot
if your dog beds are machine washable by all means wash them and i do reccomend useing baking soda with any wash because it sanitizes and deoderizes clothes and i also reccomend tide because it really gives clothes and stuff a really fresh smell

Article by Phylippa Anslow

The majority of dogs sleep for approximately fourteen hours a day, so it is important to buy your dog a bed that will be snug and functional. Memory foam dog beds are an excellent choice providing exceptional comfort and support, especially for the older, unwell or convalescing dog.

Dogs love to have their own special area and a suitable bed will help in achieving the right quantity of sleep every night. So, when purchasing a new bed for your dog, there are many things to consider and typically, it is a sensible idea to shop for a cheaper, smaller one and get a larger, permanent one once your dog grows to its full size. Ultimately, a luxury, memory foam dog bed for your dog or new puppy should be the correct size for the breed of dog. I always make sure my dog's bed is of a good size so that she has plenty of room to stretch out or curl up if she wants to.

If your dog or new puppy is a chewer then you are obviously going to have to buy a bed which is chew-proof/resistant, as not only is it very costly to keep replacing beds but also it can be dangerous for your dog to ingest the materials that are used in manufacture. Again a memory foam dog bed with a chew-proof/resistant cover would be a good choice, as puppies especially need to be able to have the best quality sleep possible.

A machine-washable bed cover can also be a very beneficial addition when buying a new memory foam dog bed, especially if your dog frequently gets dirty or sheds a lot of hair. Covers for dog beds should be washable, removable and very durable. Long-haired dogs are often more suited to a cool cotton cover as this material can help prevent dogs from overheating too much when they are staying indoors. Short haired dogs typically get cold quite easily so they are generally better suited to covers made of warmer materials such as suede or fleece to help keep them warm throughout the year.

If your dog lives outdoors it is more important than ever to buy a suitable bed and all of the previous tips should be considered. An elevated bed plus a memory foam mattress could be the perfect choice as they mould to your dog's body and thus avoid any pressure points, giving your dog maximum comfort and support.

Please don't forget a memory foam is especially good for the more mature dog. Our beautiful dog Amber, a first cross Golden Labrador/German Shepherd, is now almost seventeen years old and consequently, she is a bit arthritic. I decided to buy her a memory foam dog bed because we have had a memory foam mattress on our bed for about five years now and find it really comfortable. Indeed, we wouldn't want to go back to a more conventional mattress. She really loves her new bed and looks so comfortable that I know it's one of the best things I could have bought for her to ease her aching joints in her old age.

If you're looking for the best dog beds available today you certainly have a wide plethora of options. Dog beds today come with orthopedic support, special styles, adjustable tops for winter and summer use, and can even be made to order for special needs dogs.

Dog beds are not cheap but they are certainly worth the price. Large dogs benefit from having an orthopedically supportive bed because it helps with hip and back problems. Large dogs that are by breed prone to hip dysplasia will often seek an elevated surface to lay down on because the floors and carpets can be painful for their joints.

Smaller dogs benefit from high quality dog beds as well. Just because they are small doesn't mean that they aren't in need of back support. Long dogs often suffer back problems because they are biologically prone to back dysfunctions that can cause pain.

Of course, purchasing a high quality dog bed gives your dog a life long space to call his very own, helping to keep him off of your furniture and bed in exchange for giving him his own quiet time space. Dogs who have their own bed to sleep in are generally calmer and more self assured than those who have no space.

All dogs get cold in the winter. While some dogs are less sensitive to the temperatures of winter, a high quality bed elevates them off the floor and helps them conserve body heat. Using the best dogs beds available today helps to preserve their health and their happiness.

So what are the best dog beds? They are well made, high quality beds that offer a supportive platform. The dog bed covering is just as important as the filler material. A high quality covering is essential. This is due to the need for dogs to be able to maintain body heat in the winter time and be comfortable in the summer weather.

A really versatile dog bed covering will give your dog the ultimate comfort throughout the year. Of course, making sure that it is machine washable is a huge benefit for convenience. Dry cleaning your dog bed cover means that it won't get cleaned as often as it needs to be cleaned.

Selecting the best dog bed available today is part of caring for your dog's needs through and through. Choosing orthopedic beds for supportive sleeping is a great way to preserve your sleepy dog's bones and aid your active dog's joints.

Article by Chris Robertson

Dog beds, long considered a luxury for the family pet, are now more often seen as a necessary piece of equipment for your dog's comfort and health. Some dogs, especially young puppies, are quite content with a nest of blankets in a corner of the room. Older dogs - especially senior dogs - are much more comfortable with a bit more padding between their bones and the hard floor. There are many different types of dog beds, ranging from a simple mattress on the floor to wicker-framed nests to raised beds that get your puppy off the drafty floor and give him a warm, comfy place to curl up.

But the most important part of the bed you choose for your dog is the mattress that you choose to go with it. Dog mattresses and cushions, like dog beds, come in many different types and styles. Choose the one that's best for your puppy's particular needs.

Support Mattresses

Support mattresses are similar to the mattress that you sleep on each night. A support mattress has a padded exterior wrapped around a spring-based core. They're nearly always rectangular in shape and will fit on standard dog beds rather than into nesting baskets. Support mattresses are suitable for most dogs, and they're ideal for dogs that like to sleep on their tummies or sides with legs extended straight out. If your pup loves your mattress, chances are that a support mattress is a good choice for his dog bed.

Lounge Mattresses

Lounge mattresses are the most familiar type of dog mattresses you'll find in stores. They're usually more like cushions than mattresses, often made of flannel or denim and stuffed with foam, shredded foam or stuffing. They seldom have any type of frame to give them shape, and may be round, oval or square. Lounge mattresses are ideal as liners for basket dog beds or tossed on a floor in the corner. The soft, squishy comfort is perfect for dogs who like to sleep on their backs, or who just sprawl when they sleep.

Orthopedic Mattresses

Older dogs and those who suffer from arthritis, hip dysplasia or joint pain do especially well with orthopedic mattresses. While some have inner springs, most are made of memory foam in various thicknesses. They're designed to conform to the shape of your puppy's body and provide support for every part of it. Foam mattresses also tend to hold heat better in the winter and dispel heat more efficiently in the summer, making them more comfortable for most dogs than other kinds of mattresses.

Pillow Mattresses

One step removed from lounge mattresses, pillow mattresses are also stuffed with stuffing or shredded foam, but they're thicker and softer than lounge mattresses. When your dog sinks into a pillow or cushion mattress, he really sinks into it. If your dog is a cuddler, a pillow mattress is the ideal choice for padding in his dog beds. The soft, lumpy pillow will snuggle up around your dog and make him feel safe and secure.

When choosing dog beds, don't forget to put some thought into choosing the best type of mattress to make your precious pup feel pampered, loved and totally comfortable.

Question by Cave Girl: why do the pillows on my dogs' beds quickly end up with all the stuffing in either end and none in the middle?
Every time I buy a new pillow for my dogs' beds, within a few weeks the pillow is ruined because all the stuffing ends up at the ends, while the middle is so empty that when the dog lies on it, it's hard and the puffy ends stick up. Why does this happen and what can I do to stop it?
But once the stuffing is like that, the dogs don't want to sleep on their beds any more.

Answer by The-Massacred-One
Dogs generally rub themselves around and push the stuffing down towards the end to make themselves comfortable they prefer to be surrounded slightly by their bedding (thats how my dogs have been) theres nothing you can really do its instinct because they more they push it to the ends the more they are covered the warmer they stay. if you want avoid having to buy new ones physically push the stuffing down more they generally have a zip on the end
